When you walk down the steps to the Barcelona Olympic square you can see all of the 136 meter high “La torre de comunicacions de Montjuïc” (or torre Calatrava). The Neo Futuristic white tower stands in sharp contrast against the blue Catalan sky.
This landmark was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava (calatrava.com) as a telecommunication tower for the Summer Olympic Games of 1992. Building started in 1989 and was finished 3 years later. The materials he used were steel and concrete, the base is decorated with broken ceramic in the style of Gaudí.
Some say it represent an athlete holding the Olympic flame others say he’s bending to receive a medal. Either way it’s the most amazing telecom tower I’ve ever seen.
