AN APPEL A DAY

Karel Appel (Dutch for apple) was born on 25 april 1921 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. When he was a child he started working in his fathers barbershop. As a teenager he fell in love with art and his new life began.

Known as an abstract expressionist and sculptor, he painted nudes, portraits and landscapes. Appel was part of the avant-garde movement Cobra alongside Corneille, Constant and others.

He died on 3 May 2006 in Zurich and was buried in the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise in Paris.
